West Bay

West Bay is a charming little fishing village on the Jurassic Coast, located at the mouth of the river Brit and centered around a harbour with fishing and recreational boats. A promenade stretches around the harbour with ample seating areas to relax and watch the world go by. The Jurassic Pier extends past the harbour entrance and protrudes out into the sea, which gives you a unique perspective to view the Jurassic Coast in all its glory.

In recent years, West Bay has become an increasingly popular destination thanks to its appearance in the award-winning ITV series, Broadchurch. Viewers will recognise many of the landmarks from the hit show during a walk around the harbour. West Bay is just a 10-15 minute walk from our Highlands End Holiday Park, located on the cliff and hilltop overlooking the coast.

West Bay beaches

There is direct access to two beaches at West Bay, both of which have pay and display car parking close by. East Beach is a shingle beach that is flanked by the iconic East Cliff, which is golden in colour and follows the length of the bay. In the warmer months it is the perfect place to enjoy a picnic as you watch the boats sail in the distance. On an autumn or winter day it is equally wonderful for a blustery walk beach combing.

The beach to the west of the harbour is smaller and has rock groynes on either side making the water shallower so it is safer for swimming.

In the summer month a lifeguard services watches over the waters of both beaches. Dogs are not allowed on either beach from May to September but are welcome for the rest of the year.

Food and Drink

The small resort is renowned for its seafood, which can be purchased fresh from one of the small kiosks or restaurants surrounding the harbour. Enjoy a tasty bite to eat watching the boats land their days catch after a long day in the waters along the Jurassic Coast. We highly recommend an ice cream from Baboo Gelato or a meal at The West Bay or Rise.

Attractions

West Bay harbour is the hub of activities with a number of attractions to keep the whole family entertained. Why not try an exhilarating boat ride with Lyme Bay RIB Charter, an afternoon crabbing off the harbour side, a scenic fishing trip in the bay or a visit to the West Bay Discovery Centre? Children can also have fun at the amusement arcades.
