Sidmouth

Described as ‘a town caught still in a timeless charm,’ Sidmouth in Devon is a pretty and traditional seaside town with beautiful gardens, regency history, clean beaches, friendly shops and leisurely walks. The town nestles between majestic red cliffs, in the valley of the River Sid. The red sandstone here dates back to the Triassic period and Sidmouth is one of the best places to visit on the Jurassic Coast.

The town centre is rich in royal and architectural history and has a great range of shops, cafes and restaurants. There are numerous gardens, including Connaught Gardens with its views over both the town and Jacob’s Ladder Beach, Blackmore Gardens and ‘The Ham’ next to the river. The main pebble beach stretches the length of the esplanade, which runs the length of the town with views over the sea. There are more sandy areas towards the western end, particularly at low tide. The South West Coast Path runs through the town with challenging hilly walks in either direction, towards Ladram Bay in the west with its rock stacks and Branscombe in the east.

In Sidmouth and the surrounding area, there is a great selection of activities and attractions, including the Donkey Sanctuary and World of Country Life. There is a range of events, including the Sidmouth Regatta, Sea Fest, the famous Folk Week and the Literary Festival. Sidmouth is home to hundreds of listed buildings and was very fashionable as a holiday destination in the 1800s and was visited by Queen Victoria in her youth.
