Fossil Hunting at Charmouth
If you’re visiting the Jurassic Coast, you absolutely have to go fossil hunting at some point! The whole coastline is fantastic, and world-renowned for a reason, but Charmouth is one of the best spots to look, particularly for beginners. First, we’d recommend a visit to the Charmouth Heritage Coast Centre, which has a fantastic display of fossils and has lots to learn about the Jurassic Coast. There’s interactive exhibits and a video microscope, including a sandpit where children can dig for their own fossils. The centre also runs guided fossil hunting walks, lead by enthusiastic and knowledgeable volunteers who can give you all the tips. This can be the best head start to finding your very own fossils to take home. There is a small café next to the centre, or you could enjoy a picnic or a visit to one of the pubs in Charmouth. If you’re exploring on your own, the eastern side of the beach towards Golden Cap is dog friendly all year round.
