Tyneham

Tyneham is an abandoned village, close to Worbarrow Bay on the Jurassic Coast. Evacuated in 1943 during World War II, the village has been deserted ever since. All residents had just 28 days to leave the area when it was taken over for forces’ training. They were initially promised that they would be allowed to return but sadly they were never allowed to. The village is still part of the Lulworth Ranges and is only open to the public on most weekends and public holidays. There are exhibitions about the village and its former residents in the church and school, which are the only 2 buildings that remain fully intact. The village was connected with tales of smuggling and shipwrecks as far back as the Iron Age.

The village is a 1 mile walk from the beautiful beach of Worbarrow Bay on the Jurassic Coast. There are limited toilet facilities just a 2 minute walk from the car park, which has no fixed charge but donations are welcome to help fund ongoing conservation work. As Tyneham and Worbarrow are a part of the range, you must keep to the marked paths at all times and dogs are welcome.
