Sturminster Newton Museum
This place is not usually open now.
Sturminster Newton Museum is housed in a historic, thatched building of 16th century origin situated in the town centre with a nearby car park. This interesting building has had many uses over the years: a shop, a tearoom, solicitors offices and the Town Council. There are permanent displays of a large functioning model of Sturminster Newton Railway Station (now closed) which was once pivotal for the success of the livestock market, and clocks made by John Conway and his son during the early 1800s in this very building when it was a clock maker’s workshop.
Current temporary displays include a display of the life of poets with local connections: Thomas Hardy, William Barnes and Robert Young: home pastimes before the digital age and a history of British coinage. The museum is open on Mondays, Fridays and Saturdays from 10am to 12.30 until the end of March and then Mondays, Thursdays, and Fridays 10am to 3pm and Saturdays 10am to 12.30pm to Christmas. Admission free.
We are a Registered Charity No. 1044018 and have been supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund.
