Discover the charm of Little Bredy Walled Garden, a hidden treasure nestled in the heart of the Bride Valley, West Dorset. Just 10 miles east of Bridport and a short detour from the A35, this beautifully restored Victorian walled garden within the historic Bridehead Estate is a must-visit for holidaymakers seeking peace and natural beauty. Open from Easter Sunday to the end of September on certain days of the week, the gardens offer a perfect outing for families, couples, and nature enthusiasts exploring the Dorset countryside.
Spanning one acre on the south-facing slopes of the River Bride, the gardens boast over 1,200 feet of vibrant herbaceous borders filled with roses, lavender, and easy-care perennials, creating a colorful and fragrant escape. Wander along the riverside rose walk or admire the vegetable and cut-flower gardens, designed in a charming “tumble” of naturalised planting. The gentle flow of the River Bride, adds to the serene ambiance, making it feel like a step back in time to a “secret garden,” as one visitor described it. The tranquil setting is ideal for a gentle stroll or a moment of quiet reflection.
Managed by passionate volunteers, Little Bredy Walled Gardens is a community-driven project supporting local charities and the village church roof fund. Visitors can enjoy delicious homemade cream teas, cakes, and coffee at the cozy tea room, with outdoor seating available (umbrellas provided for drizzly days). The entry fee is £6 for adults (children free), with cashless payments accepted and free parking on-site. Dogs are welcome on short leads, and there’s partial wheelchair access, though some grassy slopes may be challenging.
For those staying in Dorset, this enchanting garden offers a delightful blend of history, nature, and hospitality, making it an unforgettable stop on your holiday. Visit and experience the magic of Little Bredy
