Stonebarrow Hill

Stonebarrow is an area within the Golden Cap Estate, consisting of rolling hills, hedgerows, and fields. The area boasts incredible views over the vast ‘Lyme Bay’ – on a clear day you will have no trouble seeing across the wide stretch of dramatic coastline. For an even better panorama, take on the challenge of ascending Golden Cap itself which stands at 191 meters above sea level and is the highest point on the South Coast of England!

Stonebarrow and the Golden Cap Estate is a wonderful location for a stroll, no matter what sort of walk you are looking for. The Smuggler’s Trail is perfect for families, and keen hikers can descend down through the valley towards the beach and begin the climb up Golden Cap via the South West Coast Path. Keep in mind, many of these sections are steep and muddy, so we recommend good walking boots, especially in winter. For those ultra-keen walkers, Stonebarrow can be added onto our West Dorset Three Peaks Challenge to make an even longer route!

Tramper hire is also available here from Countryside Mobility at the Old Radar Station, offering two different routes accessible via the off-road mobility scooter for those who struggle walking. We recommend pre-booking and checking opening times if you require this. There’s also a scheme available at Highlands End Holiday Park and many other locations nearby.

Dogs are welcome on the Golden Cap Estate, however they will need to be on a lead for much of the walk, as farmers have their cattle grazing in many of the fields and the steep cliff edge also poses a risk.

Stonebarrow has plenty of parking and in peak season you will find a small refreshments trailer located by the first car parking area. Please be aware, there are no public toilet facilities here.
