Beer Quarry Caves
Visit Beer Quarry Caves for an hour long tour through the vast man-made complex of underground caverns, created 2,000 years ago. There are pillars of Beer Stone and halls of vaulted roofs, likened to a vast underground cathedral. You can learn about the methods used to quarry and deliver huge blocks of stone, the working conditions and hardships and dangers endured by the workforce, using only the light from candles.
Beer Stone has been used on many well-known buildings, including Exeter, Winchester, St Paul’s and Norwich Catholic Cathedrals, as well as Westminster Abbey and the Tower of London.
The caves are cool so it is recommended to bring warm clothing and arrive 10 minutes before tours start. There is free on-site parking, it is not suitable for wheelchairs, only assistance dogs are permitted underground and light refreshments and souvenirs are available. Under 5s are free. It is not usually necessary to book tours in advance.
