17 July 2020

Highlands End Leisure Club will re-open on Saturday 25th July, as per the Government guidance. We are working through the information we have been given to establish exactly how we can operate safely, but we do know for certain that:

We plan to initially have 8 sessions per day, with a maximum of 16 people per session. We will be extending opening hours, with the first session arriving at 8am and the final session arriving at 6:30pm. Between each session, the club will be closed for 15 minutes for cleaning. Sessions must be pre-booked. This will be reviewed and may be refined as we find out what works and what doesn’t.

We will be closed to new memberships until at least 1st September, to prioritise existing members and holidaymakers to ensure everyone has a fair opportunity to book sessions.

We will supply more information next week on the finer details of how to book sessions and how we will operate.

03 July 2020

It’s a great shame that we have had to postpone or refund bookings for anyone in the affected postcodes in the Leicestershire area.

As per the current Government restrictions and recommendations, this applies to bookings arriving from 4th to 18th July. The situation will be monitored and the same process will take place for any other local lockdowns going forward to adhere to the advice and ensure the maximum safety of all guests, our team and the local community.

If your booking is affected, you should have been contacted already by a member of our team. We understand and share your disappointment and hope to be able to welcome you to Dorset again soon.

If you’re arriving with us this weekend, or beyond, please ensure you have read our pre-arrival information and follow the tourist charter below.

10 June 2020

I expect many of you have seen or heard Oliver Dowden, Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport, advise the House of Commons that he hopes self-contained accommodation as a lower risk and will be first in the queue on 4 July.

https://twitter.com/i/status/1268474410098405377

We are keeping up with developments which are changing daily and we will write to Holiday Home Owners and Holiday Bookings as soon as we have some positive news. Our online bookings are live for bookings from 4th July – please read the update from 08 June 2020 below for more details.

Holiday Home Owners – We are busy preparing a document that will be sent to all when the date is confirmed. This will include changes in Operational Procedures, Health and Safety policy’s, use of your Holiday Home & Facilities and many other informative topics to ensure the safety of customers, team and the community. Any queries, please write to owners@wdlh.co.uk

Holiday Visitors – A similar information sheet is being prepared with pre arrival instructions and notes to help you enjoy your holiday. Any queries bookings@wdlh.co.uk

We have continued to employee 25 members of the team to ensure the holiday parks are ready for your return – a natural landscape does not understand the restraints of a lockdown and we had to continue with our grounds maintenance and the care of the infrastructure of the holiday park.

08 Jun 2020

We are now taking new bookings from Saturday 4th July.

The Government’s advice means we expect to be open in Phase 3 and are able to take the following bookings:

Unfortunately, at this time, we are unable to take new bookings in the following categories:

For any existing bookings in these categories from July 4th onwards, we will get in contact with you 7 days before arrival to let you know if we are unable to welcome you on holiday and what your options are. If you are concerned about your holiday and would like to delay to later in the year or to 2021, please email bookings@wdlh.co.uk with your booking number and contact telephone number.

Park Facilities

We’re sorry that for the time being the shared toilet and shower block facilities, washing up sinks, laundries, park shops and children’s play areas will remain closed, as well as the soft play and leisure club at Highlands End Holiday Park. Martin’s Bar & Restaurant will be open for takeaways only until we receive further Government guidance.

Book Direct with Confidence

Should the Government change or delay the reopening dates for Holiday Parks, we have introduced a new Coronavirus Guarantee for your peace of mind, which automatically applies to all new and existing bookings free-of-charge.

In relation to the Coronavirus outbreak, you are covered for the following:

  1. The park is closed
  2. UK Government restrictions on travel
  3. A member of the party, or close family relative living in the same household, are diagnosed with COVID-19

In the event of any of the above circumstances, you can contact us between 28 days and 72 hours before arrival and choose one of the following options:

  1. Transfer of dates up until December 2021
  2. Receive a credit note to use against a future holiday
  3. Cancel and receive a full refund

The ‘New Normal’

In order to open and operate the parks safely, we will be making some changes to the way we operate, following Government guidance, with measures including, but not limited to:

‘Fresh Air Hotels’

For everyone with bookings in June, we will contact you by 20th June. Please wait for us to contact you if possible. Thank you

18 May 2020

When contacting us by email on bookings@wdlh.co.uk, please include:

12 May 2020

Holiday Bookings – May 15th to July 3rd 2020

Please can we ask that you do not telephone our bookings office which remains closed while our team are working from home. We will contact you by email or telephone with the options for your booking with us, as the details of the continuing Government restrictions unfold.  We thank you for your patience.

Holiday Homes Owners

We confirm that the parks will remain closed and we will keep in contact with you by email and the relaxation of the distance which can be travelled for exercise does not include travelling to the parks.

The Government website still confirms the following – ‘Leaving your home – the place you live – to stay at another home for a holiday or other purpose is not allowed. This includes visiting second homes”

Please do not place pressure on our staff; the park gates are locked and there are no facilities open in the area, which includes toilets. As you will appreciate, any additional traffic to the parks will understandably worry some members of the local community and give the opportunity to criticise the park for encouraging unnecessary travel. Thank you for your understanding and co-operation.

If you need to contact us, please use the email owners@wdlh.co.uk.

01 May 2020

Just a couple of quick updates to share with you today.

Firstly, we’d like to thank all those of you who are changing the dates of your bookings to later this year or 2021. We’d like to remind you that when selecting dates in the future, there may be a difference in the price of that holiday compared to your original. If your new dates are more expensive, you will be required to pay the difference, likewise if your new dates are cheaper, we will issue a credit note on your booking details for that amount, which can be used against future holidays.

Secondly, a quick reminder to any Holiday Home Owners that the parks are completely closed and there is no access available to your Holiday Homes and it is not essential travel.

We are disappointed to understand that a Holiday Home Owner visited their Holiday Home yesterday and during the visit placed rubbish against the wheelie bins which then had to be removed by staff in protective clothing. Please do not travel to the parks which will create additional concerns for our staff and in addition, is against government guidance and the protection of the NHS of staying at home.

30 April 2020

Good Afternoon,

Once again, thank you to many of you for your kind messages to the WDLH team, for your posts on our social media and for your patience while we have been revising our working methods and ensuring that the team involved with the bookings process and correspondence with our Holiday Home Owners have the necessary training and processes to deal with an unprecedented impact on our business.

As you may have seen in news reports, the economic impact of the crisis on seasonal tourism jobs has been significant for rural and coastal communities and we are pleased with the number of regular customers who have elected to take a credit notes and move dates of Holidays during the Government lockdown period. We are participating in the national campaign to not cancel but postpone holidays and we are doing everything we can to protect tourism jobs and look forward to welcoming you in the future.

Our skeleton team, many working from home, are working hard to contact bookings between 24th March – 30th April and then 1st – 7th May –  along with the rest of the country we will be watching the next Government update to then work through and process any new information we may have. We have emailed any bookings from 7th – 15th May so please check your inbox.

Please do not call, the bookings office is only covered for a limited time and the member of team on duty will probably be unable to answer your question, our best efforts to liaise with you all can only be achieved by receiving emails to bookings@wdlh.co.uk for holidays and owners@wdlh.co.uk for our Holiday Home Owners.

A small maintenance team continue to work on the parks, keeping them up together and to  cut the grass, complete winter jobs and our normal maintenance processes. (Some images below).

As a family, along with our team, we are working hard to plan for the future. Next year will be the 50th anniversary of our family ownership of Highlands End Holiday Park and we are hoping this crisis will be moving towards history and we can get back to normal and welcome many of you to West Dorset.

In the meantime, we thank you for your understanding, patience and your customer loyalty to our family business during such difficult times.

We wish you all good health, best wishes to your families and please do take care.

Kind regards

James Cox

18 April 2020

Bookings up to 30th April

Thank you for your patience while we have been changing the way in which we work to enable us to review the bookings up to 30 April.

As you will appreciate, for a small family business this transformation to working from home has raised a number of issues for us which we are gradually overcoming with professional, financial and technical support.

We know that many regular customers have already agreed to ‘Holiday Credit Notes’ which will be valid until the end of the 2021 when you make a booking by email bookings@wdlh.co.uk, or by phoning our Booking number 01308 426947; when it is open again.

Next week, we will be working towards contacting the remaining customers, starting with those who were due to arrive late March and gradually working towards the arrival date of 30 April. This has to be undertaken by staff working at home and will take some time and we thank you for your co-operation.

We usually encourage you to ring us, but in these strange times please do not call. The booking office is not staffed at the present time – please email bookings@wdlh.co.uk. We will be contacting you by the end of April.

Once again thank you for your co-operation. I apologise that this is not the normal ‘Dorset Diamond’ level of service you would expect from the West Dorset Leisure Holiday’s team. However, we have to work through this crisis with limited resources and the protection of our team by working at home and, most importantly, we want to be here to serve you in the future.

Bookings from 1st May up to 7th May

The Government announced on Thursday night an extension to the lockdown period for a further three weeks and the next review date is 7th May. Towards the end of April, we will be contacting bookings with an arrival date between 1st and 7th May 2020.

Please do not call us – we will contact you.

In the meantime, you may like to check your travel insurance which may cover the government decision in respect of the lockdown.

Once again, we thank you for your patience as we work through these bookings in date order and offer you the options available.

Bookings from 8th May onwards

For holidays after 8th May, we can only be guided by the Government’s guidance.

However, we are aware many of you have been worrying about the outstanding balance due on your future holidays and we can confirm that we have relaxed our terms and conditions in regards to balance due dates.

For holidays with an arrival date after 8 May and before 31 May, we will contact you when the Government guidance is clear. Do not send your balance until you hear from us.

For holiday arrival dates after 1 June, the balance will be due 7 days before your arrival date, if the park is open and we can welcome you to the park.  So, for now, please do not make any further payments. We will be in touch as this crisis and the government guidance unfolds.

If you booked through an Online Travel Agent, (e.g. Pitch Up) please check your terms and conditions and it may be necessary for you to contact them direct.

As a family, we are working hard to plan for the future. Next year, will be the 50th anniversary of our family ownership of Highlands End Holiday Park and, we are hoping this crisis will be moving towards history and we can get back to normal and welcome many of you to West Dorset.

In the meantime, we thank you for your understanding, patience and your customer loyalty to our family business during such difficult times.

We wish you all good health, best wishes to your families and please do take care.

24 March 2020

The PM’s Statement last night extended the Order for business to close to include caravan parks and revised the rules on staying at home and away from others. We are pleased that we took the advice to close for hire and touring on Monday and ask private owners to co-operate and leave.

We are working our way through Bookings between today and 30th April and an email will be circulated shortly. We will be contacting bookings for holidays after 30 April as this crisis unfolds

Please reply by email and not telephone, due to the restrictions in travel to work and social distancing, we have limited resources to contact you.

We thank you all for your kind wishes and cooperation – good health to you all.

James Cox

…………………..

22 March 2020

10pm

We are very pleased to see that HM Government confirms that we took the correct decision to close the parks tomorrow (23rd March at 1600hrs). Travel to holiday homes and to go on holiday is not essential travel.

COVID-19 Essential Travel Guidance

Given the clear message in the PM’s briefing this evening about the need for social distancing this confirmation confirms our belief and takes holiday parks out of the possibility of spreading the virus and adding to the pressure on NHS services.

5pm

Further to our blog below, we have now made, with Government guidance, the decision that our Parks will close at 1600hrs on Monday 2020. This gives time for the few remaining guests on the park to leave in an orderly manner.

As covered in the email below, our private holiday home owners have also been asked to co-operate and also leave tomorrow if they are on the park; and if they are at home not to travel to Dorset.

This concludes this very justified, but nethertheless upsetting, exercise and with the welcomed support of the government staff retention scheme, we can ensure the on-going employment of our team – hopefully, we will all keep well and be here ready for re-opening the parks later in the year.

10am

As stated in our update yesterday, which is below, we are no longer taking bookings and we are speaking to our customers due to arrive between now and early April as soon as possible. These are unprecedented times and we all have a responsibility to consider not just ourselves but the people in the local community, on our parks and in the UK.

We have closed Martin’s Bar & Restaurant, the Little Fire Station Soft Play and the Leisure Club at Highlands End Holiday Park and the park shops and the Receptions are by phone contact only.

If you have a holiday booked with us, please stay away and do not telephone us – we do not have the staff available to answer the calls. We will contact you over the next few weeks depending on the dates of your booking and the unfolding crisis.

With regard to our private owners on the parks, Martin sent the personal email below on 21 March asking them to co-operate and not to travel to Dorset or visit their caravan. We are asking holiday home owners not to stay in their Caravan.

We anticipate that owners who visited for the weekend and travelled before the PM’s Friday briefing will be returning home today or Monday.

With regard to comments on social media about holiday parks, we are encouraging the Government to give some guidance on the closure of parks.

It is not so straightforward as pubs and restaurants and having seen some of the party atmosphere in local pubs on Friday evening and the crowds in local tourist locations yesterday, we would urge you all to take more care and, in particular, be tolerant to all circumstances which are not necessarily perfect – it takes time to bring a whole country to an economic and social closedown as demonstrated in the supermarkets over the last 48 hours.

We are all making and implementing decisions which were unimaginable a few weeks ago.

Letter to our private Holiday Home Owners:

21 March 2020

Good morning,

I know we have written to you a number of times about the impact of the Coronavirus on the holiday parks.

This is definitely unprecedented times and we are having to make decisions and take actions which were unimaginable a few weeks ago.

Following the PM’s briefing last night, we have closed the Bar and Restaurant and Leisure facilities at Highlands.

I welcome the government’s staff retention scheme which will definitely help us to be ready to resume business when the park reopens and we will be making effort to ensure our staff are covered during this period.

We are speaking to all Hire and Touring bookings over the next three weeks about changing their holiday plans and we will roll this forward as the crisis unfolds.

With regard to private owners on the park, we ask you not to stay in your caravan at this time and be sensitive towards the views and needs of the local community and NHS.

Over the last 24 hours, there has been clear indication of an increasing concern in the understandable views of local communities towards second home owners and holiday visitors and we do not wish to see similar comments in West Dorset.  In addition, the PM has asked for no unnecessary or non-essential travel which many would consider to include leisure trips.

Your co-operation would be appreciated at this difficult time. We are expecting the Government to give us more guidance shortly and if they instruct us to close the parks completely it will be a very rapid response and we will be closing the gates.

In the meantime, our Receptions/Shops are closed and if you wish to speak to Reception, please telephone.

Highlands – 01308 426912
Golden Cap – 01297 480010
Graston and Larkfield – 01308 897361
Sandyholme – 01305 852677
WDLH Sales Office 01308 426917

Vanessa and I have been running the parks for nearly 35 years and this is a very upsetting and sad experience for us and I can ensure you that we are not making any decisions lightly and we want our family and team to be here ready to welcome you when this crisis is resolved.

Kind regards,

Martin
