Portland Bill

Portland Bill is located at the southernmost tip of the Isle of Portland. It is perhaps best known for its lighthouse, which is painted in distinctive red and white colours. The lighthouse is open to visitors and it is possible to climb the steep steps during a guided tour. From the top  you can enjoy impressive views across the english channel and watch yachts and fishing boats navigate a dangerous stretch of water, known as the Portland Race.

Portland is known for its treacherous waters and the lighthouse plays a vital role in ensuring safe passage of passing vessels. At the visitor centre, you can learn more about the history of the lighthouse and its keepers. Visitors can also participate in a number of interactive displays, including a simulation which mimics a stormy trip at sea.

Explore the Cliff Path

There are a number of excellent walks from Portland Bill, which vary in length and difficulty. If you’re feeling energetic you can follow the circular cliff path and circumnavigate the whole island. For a more gentle stroll you can walk to Pulpit rock, a stunning rock formation perched high above the sea. Alternatively, you can head out past the beach huts to the historic cranes, which continue to be used to launch small crab and lobster boats from the cranes.

Slightly in land there is a large green area, popular on windy days with children flying kites. This is also an ideal spot for a picnic or to throw a ball for your dog. Portland Bill is a great location for storm watching, with some big waves pounding the rocky coastline during rough weather.

Food and drink

If you’re feeling peckish after exploring the coastline, the Lobster Pot is the ideal place to stop for a bite to eat. It is incredibly popular and renowned locally for its impressive service and simple yet delicious menu. The Pulpit Inn is also great for a pub lunch or Sunday roast.

Parking

There is ample pay and display parking at Portland Bill, within easy walking distance of both the cafe and the lighthouse. There is also an open top bus service from Weymouth, which allows you to avoid car parking altogether!
