Budleigh Salterton

Budleigh Salterton is a small town with a magnificent pebble beach. It is part of the Jurassic Coast World Heritage Site and famed for its striking red sandstone cliffs. A trip to this area will reward visitors with far reaching views along the East Devon Coastline. Enjoy a couple of admiring the scenery, before heading on to nearby beauty spots, including Exmouth, Seaton and Beer.

Pebble beach

 The beach is undoubtedly Budleigh Salterton’s biggest draw. The two-mile stretch is popular with swimmers thanks to the clean and safe bathing waters. At the Eastern end there is a small pool where the river meets the sea. A path has been constructed on the pebbles providing access for wheelchair users and visitors with prams.

Small fishing boats and colourful beach huts line the shoreline creating a focal point for landscape photographers and budding artists. The promenade rewards walkers with picturesque views across Lyme Bay. The level path is ideal for a leisurely afternoon stroll or families with children who want to cycle or scooter. On a clear day you Portland Bill is visible in the distance. Take a break on one of the benches and watch the world go by!

Keen hikers can incorporate a trip to Budleigh Salterton into a longer walk. The tourist information centre will point you in the right direction and has a variety of maps available to purchase for a small fee. The famed South West Coast Path passes through the town.

There is ample parking just seconds from the beach. Behind the car park you’ll find a children’s play area and well-equipped skate park.

Wildlife and nature 

The River Otter runs parallel to the beach providing a stunning backdrop and opportunities for bird watching. This Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty comprises of a saltmarsh and a large area of grassland and trees. There are two bird hides where you can try and catch a glimpse of Egrets, Kingfishers and Oyster Catchers to name but a few. The Otter Estuary Nature Reserve is an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty is also home to a colony of beavers!

Independent shops

If you venture into the town centre, you’ll find a mix of independent shops selling gifts, homeware and clothes. A brook runs along the street, which in our opinion, only adds to its charm. There is a small selection of café’s and pubs to choose from if you’d like to refuel after a busy day. You’ll receive a warm welcome from the hospitable locals and a relaxed atmosphere as you sample the culinary delights.
