Bennetts Water Gardens
Bennetts Water Gardens is set in a quiet spot in Chickerell, on the outskirts of Weymouth. This popular visitor attraction boasts 8 acres of gardens, including the National Plant Collection of Water Lillies as well as the Tropical House, woodland walks and a museum.
Perhaps the most recognisable feature is the Claude Monet Style Japanese Bridge. This iconic feature looks impressive against the colourful backdrop and is a favourite among visiting photographers.
Bennetts history
The gardens have been built on the site of fomer clay pits. When the brickworks closed ground water filled the pits, creating the ponds you see today. The ponds are filled with water lillies, many of which were originally sourced from the same nursery in France that supplied the plants for Monets famous garden in France.
Wildlife
Nature lovers will be impressed by the variety of wildlife that can be seen throughout the gardens. The ponds are home to rudd, roach, carp and tench as well as frogs, toads and newts. Many species of birds have been spotted in the grounds, including herons, kingfishers, egrets and herons to name but a few. Colourful dragonflies dart around the
Food & Drink
If you’re feeling peckish during your visit, stop by the on-site cafe, Cafe Monet. The friendly team serve a variety of hot and cold lunches as well as home made cakes and cream teas. They’ve recently expanded their offering to include an increased selection of vegetarian, vegan and gluten free options.
There is also a small shop where you can pick up unusual gifts or ornaments for your garden. There are also a selection of plants for sale.
