Stampede By The Sea – Visit West Bay, Lyme Regis and Bridport

Stampede By The Sea is an incredible art trail located in West Dorset, with a herd of vibrant and colourful elephants waiting to be found! With statues located in West Bay, Lyme Regis, Bridport and Burton Bradstock, there’s plenty of fun and free family days out to be had trying to find and take pictures of them all.

The trail has been created by Weldmar Hospice, who provide specialist end of life care for local adults with a life limiting illness, and support for their loved ones. You can see the elephants until the 27th of May 2025, when they will be collected to go to auction to raise more money for the charity.

About The Elephants

Across West Dorset you can find 31 large sculptures in public spaces, as well as 28 smaller elephants in shop and business windows. The larger ones were designed and painted by local artists and the smaller ones were painted by local schools.

You can find their locations on the official trail map and on their website and app, or you could just explore and see how many you can discover on your own! To visit all the sculptures in Bridport will be a 3.3km walk, and there’s a 1.5km walk in West Bay or a 4.4km walk in Lyme Regis. The routes are all accessible for pushchairs and wheelchairs, however it’s worth noting that the trail in Lyme Regis does involve some steep slopes. In Burton Bradstock, both sculptures are located at the Hive Beach Café.

Elephants were chosen as talking about end of life care can often be seen as the “elephant in the room” and a difficult subject to discuss. The charity aims to raise awareness about the importance of talking with your loved ones about this.

The sculptures were funded by generous sponsorships from local businesses and will be made available at a private auction at the end of the event.
