Glastonbury Tor
Glastonbury Tor is an iconic landmark in Somerset, offering fantastic views over the surrounding countryside including the Somerset Levels and as far away as Dorset, Wiltshire and Wales! The tor is steeped in history and excavations at the top have revealed the plans of two superimposed churchs of St Michael, of which only a 15th Century tower remains.
Glastonbury Tor is known for being one of the most spiritual sites in the country, much like nearby Stonehenge. It’s associated with myths and legends and the nearby town of Glastonbury is quirky and unusual. The tor is nice place to visit, walk, enjoy a picnic, walk the dog or run about and have fun! It’s a steep walk to the top of the hill, but great views of the tor can be enjoyed from all around. The tor is owned and cared for by the National Trust and access if free.
The hill is known as the mystical “Isle of Avon” due to being surrounded by the Somerset Levels, which in ancient times were a shallow, marshy sea. Then, Glastonbury Tor was an island. Over millions of years the surrounding softer land was eroded, leaving the harder rock and creating this dramatic feature we see today.
There is no parking at the Tor and the nearest car park is at Draper and Co on Chilkwell Street (2 minute walk). A seasonal park & ride operates from Glastonbury Town Centre at BA6 9EW. The path up to the tor are concrete with a bench halfway. Dogs on leads are welcome.
