Lewesdon Hill

Like many of the high hills in Dorset, Lewesdon Hill is the site of an Iron Age hill fort. Parts of the original bank and ditches are visible and more recently, the hill was used as a site for one of the Armada Beacons in 1588, to warn of an impending attack from Spain.

The hill stands at 279 metres (915ft) above sea level and is the highest point in Dorset. There are two main footpaths leading up to the summit, one from the village of  Broadwindsor, and one from Coombe Lane (off the B3162 between Broadwindsor and Bridport, just before the Four Ash crossroads).

In the spring, the hill is covered in bluebells, in particular the paths up from Coombe Lane. There are a number of rope swings made by the local children right up on top of the hill. There are beautiful views out across the Marshwood Vale from between the trees on the way up. Dogs are welcome if kept under control at all times. There are no toilet facilities available nearby.
