Lyme Regis Holidays

Lyme Regis is a small coastal town at the western end of the Jurassic Coast. It is known as the ‘Pearl of Dorset’ and extremely popular with visitors due to its pretty working harbour, independent shops and wide selection of places to eat and drink.

We highly recommend taking some time to explore this part of the Dorset coast during your stay at one of the West Dorset Leisure Holiday’s parks. Here we share some of our favourite things to do during a Lyme Regis holiday alongside our top pick of places to stay.

Explore the picturesque harbour

Lyme Regis harbour is a hive of activity, especially in the summer months. The picturesque working harbour is busy with fishing boats returning to land their catch after a busy day at sea. The cobb is lined with lobster pots and rope, which in our opinion, only adds to its charm. It’s one of our favourite places to sit and spend some time watching the world go by.

At the end of the harbour wall you’ll find the Lyme Regis Aquarium. This family friendly attraction is only small, but we highly recommend paying it a visit during your stay. Inside you’ll find a host of marine life and information boards about the different species. For a truly unique experience you can hand feed mullet or even hold a crab!

Lyme Regis boat trips

If you feel inspired to get out on the water after walking around the harbour, there are plenty of boat trips to choose from. Lyme Rib Rides offer leisurely cruises along the Jurassic Coast as well as high speed jaunts in their state of the art rib. There are also a number of charter fishing boats offering deep sea fishing trips for all the family. You can even get a Water Taxi service to West Bay and back, for an alternative way to travel along the coast.

Lazy beach days

There are 4 beaches to choose from in Lyme Regis – Monmouth beach, Town beach, Church Cliff and East Cliff. Monmouth is stoney and the perfect choice for fossil hunters, whereas Church cliff is popular spot for rockpooling at low tide. Town beach is best suited to visitors with young children thanks to the golden sand and sheltered bathing waters. There is a lifeguard service here in peak season and easy access to amenities and watersports hire equipment.

Food and drink

There’s a wide selection of pubs, cafes and restaurants to choose from in Lyme Regis. Whether you’re in the mood for traditional pub grub, freshly caught seafood or a portion of fish and chips to eat on the beach, you’re bound to find something that takes your fancy. We personally recommend Swim, the Cobb Arms or Millside, a fine fining restaurant next to the Town Mill.

Shopping

If you fancy indulging in a little retail therapy during your Lyme Regis holiday you won’t be disappointed with the array of shops on offer. While away a couple of hours perusing the independent boutiques, and don’t just stick to the high street and the sea front – there’s plenty of hidden gems down the narrow side streets too. You’ll find clothes, homeware, gifts and antiques, jewellery and fossils. Art lovers will find plenty of galleries displaying the works of local artists who have been inspired by the coastline here.
