Things to do on your Durdle Door holiday
Lazy beach days
Durdle Door is one of the most scenic beaches in Dorset and the perfect place to spend a lazy day. Arrive early to avoid the crowds and spend a couple of hours enjoying the peace and quiet. The shingle beach is ideal for relaxing in the sun. You’ll be treated to spectacular scenery with views across Weymouth Bay to the Isle of Portland in the distance.
The water is an impressive aqua marine colour providing the perfect snorkelling conditions. Care should be taken if you decide to go for a swim, though as the water gets deep quickly and there is no lifeguard service on duty. It’s also important to note that there are no facilities on the beach and it’s a steep walk back to the car. You’ll need to come prepared with a picnic and drinks if you plan on spending the day here. The beach here, like most in this part of Dorset, is dog-friendly all year-round, so the whole family can enjoy the sea here!
Adventure Activities
If a beach day is not for you, Lulworth Outdoors offer a range of adventure activities. These take place across the Lulworth Estate and include coasteering, kayaking, archery, mountain biking and more.
Boat trips
A boat trip is one of the best ways to see Durdle Door up close. From the water you can really appreciate the sheer size of the arch and take in the scenery from a unique perspective. During the trip you’ll be able to take some great photographs and admire the rocky outcrop from the other-side. Some people say that it looks like a dragon drinking from the sea from when you approach it from behind!
There are a couple of companies offering boat trips to Durdle Door. The Lulworth Estate offers trips aboard their wooden vessel from the beach at Lulworth Cove. Groups wanting a longer trips should check out Snapper Charter’s Jurassic Coast Tours.
Scenic walks
There are plenty of walks along the Jurassic Coast that can be incorporated into your Durdle Door Holiday. We recommend the short but scenic route to neighbouring Lulworth Cove, which offers beautiful views of the surrounding countryside as you make your way to the beach. At Lulworth you can grab a bite to eat and a refreshing ice cream, before continuing on to Fossil Forest and Mupe Bay a couple of miles away. In the opposite direction you can walk along the South West Coast Path to Bats Head or White Nothe.
