Exploring the West Dorset Three Peaks Challenge

Nestled along the stunning Jurassic Coast, the West Dorset Three Peaks Challenge, organised by West Dorset Leisure Holidays, offers an exhilarating adventure for walkers, runners, and nature enthusiasts. This 9.3-mile circular route takes you to the summits of three iconic Dorset landmarks: Thorncombe Beacon (157 meters), Golden Cap (191 meters), and Colmer’s Hill (127 meters). Whether you’re a local or a holidaymaker staying at Highlands End, Eype Beach or Golden Cap Holiday Park, this challenge combines breathtaking views, physical exertion, and the charm of Dorset’s countryside.

Starting at Highlands End Holiday Park, Golden Cap Holiday Park or Eype Beach Holiday Park, the trail weaves through picturesque villages like Chideock and Symondsbury. Each peak offers unique vistas: Thorncombe Beacon boasts panoramic views of Lyme Bay, Golden Cap—the highest point on the South Coast—overlooks the Jurassic Coast, and Colmer’s Hill, with its distinctive tree-crowned summit, provides a postcard-perfect scene of rolling hills.

In May 2025 the route was updated to incorporate a new footpath from Chideock to Quarr Hill. This new path avoids Hell Lane, which is steep and also muddy all year round and is a much wider and more accessible path.

What makes this challenge special is its flexibility. You can take it slow, savouring the scenery, or push for a personal best. We encourages participants to submit their times and photos to marketing@wdlh.co.uk for a chance to join the leaderboard. The current record stands at an impressive 1 hour 22 minutes for runners, while walkers typically aim for 2 hours 16 minutes or more.

The route is well-supported with refreshment stops, including Martin’s Bar & Restaurant at Highlands End, The Anchor Inn at Seatown, The Clockhouse Inn and The George Inn at Chideock, The Ilchester Arms in Symondsbury and Symondsbury Estate. These spots offer a chance to refuel with hearty meals or a quick drink while soaking in Dorset’s hospitality.

The West Dorset Three Peaks Challenge is more than a hike—it’s an immersion in nature, history, and community. Whether you’re chasing a leaderboard spot or enjoying a leisurely stroll, this adventure captures the essence of Dorset’s wild heart. Plan your visit, lace up your boots, and discover why this challenge is a must-do for anyone exploring the Jurassic Coast.
