A Sparkling Silver for Sustainability!
It’s that time of year again, the Dorset Tourism Awards! After five months of independent judging, finalists from hospitality and tourism businesses of all kinds gathered to celebrate together. There were so many different titles up for grabs, and as one of the most sustainable holiday parks in Dorset, this year we decided to enter Highlands End Holiday Park into the Ethical, Responsible & Sustainable Tourism category again. It’s a tough area to stand out in, as we’re repeatedly hearing at these events over the last few years. More and more businesses are taking steps not just to minimise negative environmental impacts, but also to create positive changes where they can.
The category also focusses on ethical social practices and responsibility within local communities, looking at how businesses treat their team members and also contribute to the wider society. It’s an area we’re incredibly passionate about as a company, and are always looking to make improvements in the way we operate. We believe that when the environment thrives, everyone benefits, and when our people are happy, we’re able to create the best possible holidays for our valued guests.
Dorset Tourism Awards Event
This year the awards were held in the Marsham Court Hotel in Bournemouth. Juliet our Finance Manager, and Theresa from our Bookings and Administration Team, attended on our behalf and proudly collected our award, a sparkling silver! With so many businesses doing incredible things, it was an honour to be recognised amongst the best in Dorset once again.
We’d like to offer our congratulations to all the other award recipients on the night, and our thanks go to the event organisers, as well as Voltshare, the sponsors of our award.
Sustainability on the Parks
Over the years we’ve undertaken a number of environmental projects and initiatives, including the current Rewilding project being undertaken on the farmland surrounding the Park. Our Green Team have resumed their regular meetings, discussing various ideas and planning projects between departments. Last year’s newest solar panel installation has produced incredible results, generating 102mWh of electricity in its first 4 months, enough to power 35 homes for an entire year! The Park is now completely self-sufficient, with around half the power generated being exported to the National Grid, supporting local infrastructure and properties.
It’s not all about the environment though, we’re looking after people too! Our latest Maker’s Market raised ÂŁ3,300 for Julia’s House Children’s Hospice and we’re planning on organising a charity Foot Golf tournament this year too. We continue to donate surplus food from our Spar stores to local food banks and always choose to use local suppliers and businesses where we can. And that’s just the start…
