Wareham

Wareham is a small Saxon town located on the edge of the River Frome. It has a rich and chequered history, which can be seen as you explore the town today. Follow the ‘Walls Walk’, to learn about the towns three walls, which were erected to prevent a viking invasion. The grassy mounds are now managed to ensure that wildlife and flowers thrive.

The town has an excellent selection of small independent shops, galleries and eateries dotted along a traditional high street. The Rex cinema remains a popular destination for visitors and locals alike, thanks to its unique 1930’s vintage style.

Bustling Quayside

The quayside is a hive of activity, especially during the warmer months. There is a small farmers market, where local producers and artisan makers come to sell their wares on Saturday’s each week. On Wednesday’s during the summer there is live music, dancing and fireworks. Children will love the traditional family friendly activities, which happen earlier in the evening and include duck races, tug of war and face painting.

The quay is lined with a selection of quaint pubs and cafe’s, ideal for grabbing a bite to eat and watching the world go by. If you’re looking for something a little bit more adventurous you can hire a kayak or self drive boat, allowing you to explore the River Frome at your leisure.

Nature to discover

Keen walkers will enjoy a gentle stroll along the river bank, where there is abundance of birdlife to admire. There are two circular routes to follow, both of which start at the quay. Just a short drive from the town centre, Arne is definitely worth a visit. This RSPB managed nature reserve boasts impressive views across Poole harbour to Brownsea Island and woodland nature trails to explore.
