Chapman’s Pool
The area surrounding Worth Matravers provides visitors with a true taste of rural Purbeck and the wild beach of Chapman’s Pool is no exception. Because the beach is so secluded, it rarely gets busy. Even in the height of summer you will probably only find around 20 or so people dotted along the shoreline. To get to the beach head through Worth Matravers village and follow Weston Road which will lead you to Renscombe car park. There is no charge for using it however there is a vehicle height limit so only suitable for cars. You will need to take everything you need with you as there are no facilities at the beach itself.
We recommend taking your beach shoes if you have them. The beach is stoney and the rocks here are slippery to walk on near the shoreline. Make sure you also take plenty of water and food if you’re planning in staying for a while. However there are lots of fossils to be found which should keep older children amused for hours. And if you are heading in the water for a swim make sure you take your snorkelling equipment. The sea is usually very calm and boasts crystal clear waters. Save some energy for the way back though as it’s a very hot walk back up the cliff path if you’re visiting in the summer. The beach is dog friendly throughout the year but there is little shade for them on the beach.
Fantastic pub
After your day at the beach and as a reward for your walk back up to the car park, we highly recommend refreshing yourself at the fantastic pub in Worth Matravers village. The Square and Compass dates back to 1752 as an inn. Amazingly it has been in the same family for over 100 years. Uniquely, there is a fossil museum in the pub, including some dinosaur fossils, as well as other fascinating artefacts from local history. These include prehistoric tools, Roman coins, bits of 18th century shipwrecks, and agricultural curiosities like cow cake cutters and turnip crunchers. There is also a very picturesque beer garden which has stunning views down to Winspit and the sea beyond.
