Beaminster
Beaminster is located in rural West Dorset at the foot of a valley. It is surrounded by beautiful countryside and perfectly positioned for escaping the hustle and bustle of busier towns in the county. Beaminster has an extensive array of listed cottages and buildings, which help create a quaint town centre.
There are a number of independent shops to peruse during a visit, ideal for selecting a last minute gift. There is a particular focus on homeware and soft furnishings. The butchers and bakery are great for local produce and there are numerous eateries to enjoy a bite to eat. Beaminster also boasts an excellent selection of pubs with a cosy feel. The Ollerod for instance, dates back to the 13th Century and has an exciting menu using locally sourced ingredients.
Beaminster is close to the source of the River Brit, which is the highlight of a number of walks in the area. Keen hikers will enjoy the Brit Valley Way, which begins in Chedington, just north of Beaminster and follows the river until it meets the sea in West Bay. The walk passes through the town centre, making an ideal pit stop on your journey.
Things to do
Beaminster is renowned locally as a hub of culture and is popular amongst artists. Each year this is celebrated in the Beaminster Festival of Music and Visual Arts, which showcases some of the best artwork and literature in the region. Beaminster Museum has numerous exhibitions, which change on a seasonal basis and give an insight into local history.
Mapperton House, a Jacobean Mansion is well worth a visit during your time in Beaminster. This stunning stately home has been voted the best manor house in the UK and has beautiful gardens to explore.
