South West Success!

8 April 2022Holiday Park News, West Dorset Tourism

The celebrations just keep on coming!

After a fantastic result at the Dorset Tourism Awards in February, where Highlands End won Gold and Golden Cap won Silver in the Holiday Park of the Year category, we were excited to attend the South West Tourism Awards, with both parks having progressed to the finals.

After a virtual ceremony for the Dorset Awards and the obvious limitations on in-person gatherings for the past couple of years, being able to celebrate with everybody together was an amazing feeling and the atmosphere at the event was incredible. With a massive 467 entries from across Wiltshire, Gloucestershire, Bath, Bristol, Somerset, Dorset, Devon, Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly, the room was packed with over 300 winners, supporters and leaders in the tourism industry. The awards recognise the best businesses across lots of categories including pubs, restaurants, attractions, holiday parks, B&Bs and many more.

There was a nerve-wracking wait for the announcement, but we were over the moon to find out Highlands End has won the Gold award, and Golden Cap has won joint silver!

This means that Highlands End Holiday Park is officially the best holiday park in the whole of the South West of England, with Golden Cap just behind in joint second place! As a family-run business, everything we have achieved is a real team effort and a huge thanks goes to everyone working at all our parks, as well as our wonderful guests and holiday home owners.

James Cox, Group Manager and member of the family who has run the business for over 50 years, said “As a family we are extremely proud that two of our parks have been recognised at this prestigious level as Gold and Silver in the South West Tourism Awards. It is a testament to our team’s hard work, enthusiasm and willingness to adapt, particularly over the last 24 months, to put West Dorset Leisure Holidays at the forefront of Holiday Park of the year for the South West. Over the last 50 years our vision has been to provide a fantastic experience and memorable holidays in West Dorset and this recognition has certainly hit a new high. We are looking forward to a successful 2022 season and hopefully news of progressing to the National Awards.”

With so many fantastic holiday parks in the South West, the competition was strong, so to even get to this stage is a huge achievement and we couldn’t be happier with the result. You can see the full list of winners and finalists by clicking here.

Robin Barker, Director of Services for Tourism Ltd, who manage the Awards, added: “What a night!  Tourism is known as ‘the happiness industry’ and last night showed everyone why, with friends, colleagues and competitors all reunited to join in the celebrations after two years of being kept apart. Congratulations to everyone who has continued to excel and innovate despite the countless hurdles.”

Co-Director Nell Barrington added: “I am so thrilled that we are all able to come together at Sandy Park for our first South West awards ceremony in two years.  After such a terrible time for tourism, hospitality and indeed everyone it is great to be able to share the successes of all these amazing businesses in person. Congratulations to them all.”

Amongst the many winners from other categories, we were thrilled to share our celebrations with West Bay Discovery Centre, who won Gold in the Ethical, Responsible and Sustainable Tourism Award.

This park is in a wonderful location. The local village is beautiful and only a 15 min walk along the river. The beach is then another 15 minutes along - again a beautiful walk. We were blessed with amazing weather so we spent the afternoon on Hive Beach.
