How To Choose The Perfect Caravan Holiday Home
Buying your own Holiday Home is an exciting time, and choosing which model to go for is an important decision and one you don’t want to rush. We’ve created this guide on how to choose the perfect caravan holiday home to suit you and your family, as we know that the range of options available can seem quite daunting at the start of your search. For the purposes of this blog, we’ve assumed you’ve already chosen the Park you’d like to be on – somewhere you feel relaxed and in an area you love.
1 – Bedrooms
The first thing you’ll need to decide on when choosing the perfect Holiday Home is how many bedrooms you require. This will mainly depend on who will be predominantly using the caravan.
If it’s just you, a 2 bedroom model might be more than enough, allowing you to sleep in the master bedroom and use the second bedroom as extra storage, or somewhere to work or do hobbies, while still keeping the option to have guests stay.
If you have a large family who will want to visit, a 2 bedroom might still be suitable, as many living areas have sofa beds, which can be surprisingly comfortable.
If you’d prefer your guests to each have their own space, then you might want to consider a 3 bedroom model. It’s worth noting however, that unless you opt for a lodge or a considerably larger caravan, having 3 bedrooms may decrease the size of your kitchen and living area, so it’s all about weighing up what’s important to you.
At WDLH Parks, we mostly stock 2 bedroom models pre-sited and ready to move into. However, we do have a number of vacant pitches just waiting for a holiday home of your choosing, and many of the larger pitches will happily take a 3 bedroom model. So, just because you may not see a 3 bed Holiday Home listed on our website, it doesn’t mean it’s not an option!
2 – Bathrooms
Next to consider is bathrooms – how many you’d like, and if you’d prefer a walk-in shower, or one over a bath.
If you’re not anticipating guests often, or you don’t mind sharing a bathroom, you may not feel the need for a model with an en-suite. As well as less maintenance and cleaning, you’re also likely to end up with a slightly larger master bedroom if you choose this option.
If you would like an en-suite separate from the family bathroom, think about what your requirements are. Some models just have an en-suite toilet and sink, while others have a shower in as well. Even if you don’t have visitors, having 2 showers can be really handy if you and your partner are getting ready in the morning at the same time.
In some larger models, the family bathroom actually contains a bath as well as a shower. If this is something that appeals to you, make sure to add this to your search criteria. You’re unlikely to get a bath in an en-suite unless you opt for a lodge, but some large models of caravan do boast this feature.
Occasionally you’ll see a model with Jack-and-Jill style doors i.e. 2 doors leading into the same bathroom. While some people like the convenience of this design, others aren’t a fan – it’s all down to personal preference!
3 – Living Area
You may not realise it, but having your living room at one end, and your bedrooms at the other end isn’t the only layout option available! While it’s true that most Holiday Homes default to this option, it is possible to get a Holiday Home with a living area in the centre and there are a number of reasons why you might want to do this.
If you’d like a bit more space between you and your guests/children while you sleep, a centre-lounge layout is perfect for this. It also works well if you are getting a large side decking and/or the best views are to the side of your pitch. A more traditional layout is ideal if most of your decking is at the front, or if that’s where the best views are.
It’s also worth considering the dining table, and whether you’re happy with bench/sofa seating or if you’d prefer freestanding dining chairs.
4 – Kitchen
How important the kitchen is to each family varies considerably. If you’re keen cooks, then obviously a larger kitchen space is going to be a non-negotiable. However, if you’re not that into cooking, or if you like to treat yourselves to meals out often while you’re on holiday, then you might choose a model with a smaller kitchen in order to have as much space as possible in the living area.
Depending on the layout of the rest of the Holiday Home, there are a number of different configurations you might find, including U-shaped, L-shaped and galley-style. It’s also possible to get optional extra utilities such as dishwashers or washing machines if these are on your wish list.
4 – Storage
When thinking about how much storage you’ll need, it’s worth considering how long you’ll be using your Holiday Home for at a time. If you’ll mostly be doing short, weekend trips, you may be happy with more open space, with less need for storage. If you’ll be staying for a couple of weeks at a time, you’ll probably need to make the most of the space to store as much as possible.
Cupboards in the kitchen and bedroom are the obvious place to start, but there are plenty of other spaces to consider. Under the sofas and beds, in a coffee table/ottoman, bathroom cabinets and more are all spaces that can be utilised for extra storage. Holiday Homes with built-in furniture can often have more storage space than those with free-standing.
5 – Pitch
Choosing your pitch is almost as important as choosing the Holiday Home to go on it. Not all pitches on a Park are the same size, so choosing a larger pitch will enable you to choose a bigger model of Holiday Home, which will in turn influence many of your decisions on the above topics, as smaller models are obviously more limited in terms of layout and space.
The location of your pitch will also determine if there is space for a front, side, L-shaped or wraparound decking, which may enable you to consider a model with French doors at the front. You should also consider the parking situation as not all pitches can have parking next door. There’s also the obvious things like the view, surrounding trees and proximity to Park facilities.
We have vacant pitches across all our Parks, in sizes ranging from 28’x12′ to extra-wide 40’x20′ pitches suitable for luxury Lodges.
