The new WDLH Green Team!
In order to improve our sustainability and reduce our environmental impact, the West Dorset Leisure Holidays Management Team recently got together to discuss climate change and plastics on the holiday parks, in an effort to agree some strategic objectives for the parks in how they are managed and operated.
After reviewing the great work we have done so far, which you can find out about here, the various departments looked at ways to to continue to reduce the impact of the parks on the environment, with key ideas discussed including electric vehicles, water bottle refills, use of solar panels and turbines, reducing single-use plastics and replacing grass areas with wildflowers to provide habitats for insects.
Managers and their teams were encouraged to think about ideas that could be implemented during the winter season, with improvements being made, where possible, for the 2020 season. Managers and team members put themselves forward to be part of a new ‘Green Team,’ set up to push forward and implement ideas. We look forward to showing you the positive changes we will be making over the coming months and years.
Following the meeting, the team visited a local business, Dorset Nectar Cider who offer vineyard tours and cider tasting in the countryside just outside of Bridport. It was fascinating to learn about the different techniques and practices on an organic award-winning farm and of course to taste a selection of their ciders.
We love to work with local suppliers and businesses, especially Dorset Nectar who share a similar ethos, and we are delighted that we are able to sell tickets for their tours in our Park Shops at Highlands End Holiday Park, Golden Cap Holiday Park and Graston Copse Holiday Park.
Our first decisions made by our ‘Green Team’ has been to introduce resealable / refillable cans of water from CanOwater in the park shops at Highlands End & Golden Cap and in Martin’s Bar & Restaurant. They also are trialling selling glass bottles of milk in the shop at Highlands End, following a discussion with our local Bridport supplier Hanger’s Dairy. The bottle needs to be returned to us and they can be reused over and over again reducing our plastic impact. We hope to roll this out to the shop at Golden Cap in the future as well.
